From dramatic Pacific coastlines and towering mountain peaks to charming historic towns, world-class vineyards, and unforgettable culinary experiences, Northern California has a little something for everyone.
The Friends of the Clifton Park Library are heading west September 13 – 20, 2027, for an eight-day adventure through some of California’s most beautiful and fascinating destinations. Along the way, participants will discover a few things that make this part of the country so special. Here are some special tidbits about the historic, cultural, and culinary highlights of some of the stops on the trip, to whet your appetite.
Monterey: Where History Meets the Sea
Monterey once served as the capital of California under both Spanish and Mexican rule, and it claims a long list of California “firsts” (state’s first theater, public library, and printing press). It’s also famous for its historic waterfront, Cannery Row, and fishing heritage – made famous by author John Steinbeck. One of the trip’s highlights will be a drive along the spectacular 17-Mile Drive, featuring dramatic ocean views, the iconic Lone Cypress, and beautiful coastal scenery.
Yosemite: Nature at Its Most Magnificent
Few places capture the grandeur of America’s natural landscape quite like Yosemite National Park. From the towering granite face of El Capitan to the breathtaking views of Half Dome and Yosemite Falls, this is a photographer’s dream – and the spot where Ansel Adams captured the granite cliffs, waterfalls, and storms for decades. Yosemite is also known for its history in the national park movement – inspiring President Teddy Roosevelt to expand federal protection of Yosemite, along with creating five national parks, 18 national monuments, 55 national bird sanctuaries and wildlife refuges, and 150 national forests.*
Sacramento: Gold Rush History and California Culture
California’s capital has a fascinating past. During the Gold Rush, Sacramento became a bustling center of commerce and the western terminus of the Pony Express. Today, its historic Old Sacramento district offers a glimpse into that era, with restored buildings and old-fashioned wooden sidewalks. The Crocker Art Museum is the oldest continually operating public art museum in the western United States; trip participants will have the opportunity to visit that or the California State Railroad Museum, which celebrates the rich history in the home of the starting point for the western part of the Transcontinental Railroad.
Lake Tahoe: Mountain Beauty on the Water
With its brilliant blue waters and spectacular Sierra Nevada backdrop, Lake Tahoe is one of California’s most beautiful destinations. At more than a mile above sea level, Lake Tahoe is not just beautiful, but also has an interesting history and varied use over the years. Tour participants will enjoy a cruise and history lesson!
Napa Valley: A Toast to California
No California adventure would be complete without a visit to wine country! Napa is not just synonymous with wine – it’s also home to a rich culinary culture, with many Michelin stars and cuisine grown locally.
