Each year, World Breastfeeding Week is observed from August 1–7, and National Breastfeeding Month is celebrated throughout August in the United States. These observances raise awareness of the many health benefits of breastfeeding and the vital role that families, employers, and communities play in helping parents achieve their breastfeeding goals.
Although breastfeeding is the most natural way to nourish an infant, it is not always easy. Many mothers face challenges, particularly as they balance caring for a newborn with work, family responsibilities, and daily life. Having access to supportive resources can make a meaningful difference.
Breastfeeding provides significant health benefits for both babies and mothers. For infants, breastfeeding is associated with a lower risk of respiratory infections, ear infections, allergies, and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). For mothers, it is linked to a reduced risk of postpartum depression and chronic conditions such as breast cancer, Type 2 diabetes, and osteoporosis.
To recognize National Breastfeeding Month, the CPH Friends is highlighting one of the many ways the Library supports breastfeeding parents—through its dedicated lactation room. Located in the Children’s Library, the room provides a private, comfortable space for nursing or expressing milk.
According to librarian Brianna, “The lactation room is a dedicated private space to nurse a baby or to pump milk. The room is quiet with comfortable seating, which makes for a more relaxed experience, and it has a sink, making cleanup easy. This room is a great support for those who need it.”
Librarian Kaity shares a similar appreciation: “The lactation room at the library is a comfortable, clean space that I am very grateful for. I am really glad that the library supports breastfeeding moms and provides this space for us.”
Health organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, followed by continued breastfeeding alongside complementary foods for up to two years or longer, as desired by mother and child. Reaching these goals can be especially challenging for parents returning to work.
“As an employee,” Brianna adds, “the lactation room was such a nice resource to have when I needed to pump during my shift.”
Lactation rooms provide an essential resource for breastfeeding families. Because infants do not follow predictable schedules, parents often need a clean, private space to nurse or express milk while away from home. These accommodations allow families to continue participating in everyday activities—including visiting the library—with greater comfort and confidence.
Library patron Radhika describes the impact best: “This room makes it possible for me to come to the library, care for my baby, and get my toddler out of the house stress-free! Thank you for thinking of us new moms.”
By providing a welcoming lactation room, the Library demonstrates its commitment to supporting families and creating an inclusive environment where parents and children can thrive. During World Breastfeeding Week and National Breastfeeding Month, the CPH Friends is proud to recognize this important service and celebrate the Library’s ongoing dedication to the well-being of our community.
